Summit - Gipfel - Erlebnisse

Ascent Kiimanjaro via the Rongai route, then descent the Marangu route. For less experienced hikers, this is definitely the tour of choice.

The 9-day tour (7 days on the mountain) can be combined with a Safari and/or Zanzibar beach holiday.

Itinerary: Rongai-Mawenzi Route

Arrival in Tanzania

Day 1: Arrival in Arusha, Kilimanjaro International Airport. Drive to Moshi and relax in the hotel (B/BF)

Kilimanjaro Trekking (day 1)

Day 2: From the hotel or the lodge drive with a private bus through a region of lush vegetation, coffee and banana plantations to the north side of Kilimanjaro. Bypassing forest area we continue to Nale Moru, the starting point for the ascent. A narrow path along the corn and potato fields into forests leads up the mountain.

3 hours drive, walking time approx 3-4 hours overnight in tents (FB, 2600 m / 8'500 feet).

Kilimanjaro Trekking (day 2)

Day 3: The path gently moves up dry grasslands with of lava formed caves. After lunch we leave the main path and walk across the moorland towards Mawenzi. Finally we reach the camp near the Kikelewa Caves (3.cave).

Walking time 5-7 hours overnight in tents (FB, 3600m / 11'800 feet).

Kilimanjaro trekking - Mawenzi tarn (day 3)

Day 4: Today's stage is very steep, but short. We move from grass-covered slopes into a high alpine zone withe virtually no vegetation. The fantastic panoramic views reward the efforts of the climb to t´he camp next to the Mawenzi Tarn, a small lake at the foot of the jagged rocks of Mawenzi, the 5149m high Mount Kilimanjaro neighbor.

Walking time 3-4 hours overnight tent (FB, 4300m / 14'100 feet ).

Kilimanjaro - Rest day at Mawenzi (day 4)

Day 5: Rest day at the tarn camp, or optional short walks. All with the fascinating backdrop of Mawenzi mountain.

Overnight in tent (FB, 4300m / 14'100 feet)

Kilimanjaro Trekking - School Hut (day 5)

Day 6: A wide desert, like a lunar landscape, leads on a reminiscent level across the saddle between Mount Kilimanjaro and Mawenzi.  The next camp is at School Hut or Kibo hut. In the afternoon we prepare the equipment for the next day. Then, after an early dinner, we get some sleep, to be suspended shortly after midnight for the summit climb of Kilimanjaro.

Walking time is about 4-5 hours, overnight hut (fb, 4800m, 15'750 feet)

Summit Kilimanjaro (day 6)

Day 7: Between midnight and 2 o'clock we march off. The summit day is the steepest and most demanding. In the light of our headlamps we leave as a group in a common tempo. You will be accompanied by local leaders and the Summit Travel expedition leader, which are in radio contact with each other. Thus, when appropriate, individual groups can be formed walking at their own pace. By a steep dirt track we reach the crator rim, aprox. 4-6 hours to Gilman's Point at 5685 m. From the summit crater the terrain leads less steep, but often with snow and ice, up the last 200 meters, about another 1-2 hours to the main summit, Uhuru Peak at 5895 m / 19'340 feet, the highest point in Africa.

The wide, wonderful view rewards us for all the hardships of the trip. Because of the early climb, we have a better best chance of good vision. We descent to Kibo Hut (lunch/late breakfast), then after a short rest to the Horombo hut.

Walking time: about 9-12 hours (6-8 hours climb, descend 3-4 hours)
Summit 5895 m / 19'340 feet
Overnight camping (FB, 3760m / 12'350 feet)

Trekking Kilimanjaro (day 7)

Day 8: Despite the long but not very strenuous descent we have time to admire the landscape and flowers. Back at the Marangu Gate, we sign ourselves out of the record book. It is time to say 'good bye' to our guides and porters, and - assuming satisfaction - to show our gratitude with a good tip. Then we drive to the hotel and you will be rewarded for the successful summit with a certificate of the national park.

Walking time is about 3-4 hours, takes about 1 hour, overnight Hotel (B / F).

Flight home or onward journey: Safari or Beach.

Day 9: Transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport and flight home or continue to the next programm travelling through Africa.
